Green Coffee Bean Extract (From Coffea Robusta)

Green coffee bean extract is derived from unroasted coffee beans of the Coffea robusta species. Unlike roasted coffee, green coffee beans retain higher levels of chlorogenic acids, which are believed to be responsible for many of their health benefits. Coffea robusta is a species known for its hardiness and higher caffeine content compared to Coffea arabica.

Phytochemical Constituents

The primary active constituents in green coffee bean extract are:

Chlorogenic Acids (CGAs)

These are a family of phenolic compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Caffeine

Although present, it's generally in lower concentrations than in roasted coffee.

Other Phenolic Compounds

Including caffeic acid, ferulic acid, and quinic acid.

Mechanism of Action:

Chlorogenic Acids and Glucose Metabolism

CGAs are thought to inhibit glucose absorption in the intestine and enhance insulin sensitivity, potentially contributing to blood sugar regulation.

Antioxidant Effects

CGAs act as potent antioxidants, scavenging free radicals and reducing oxidative stress.

Lipid Metabolism

Some studies suggest that CGAs may influence lipid metabolism, potentially contributing to weight management.

Blood Pressure Regulation

Certain CGAs may have vasodilatory effects, potentially contributing to blood pressure regulation.

Clinical Evidence :

Weight Management

Several studies have explored the effects of green coffee bean extract on weight loss. Some trials have shown modest reductions in body weight and body fat, but results are mixed, and more high-quality research is needed.

Blood Sugar Regulation

Some studies indicate that green coffee bean extract may improve insulin sensitivity and reduce postprandial blood glucose levels. However, further research is necessary to confirm these findings.

Blood Pressure

Some clinical trials have shown that green coffee bean extract may have a mild antihypertensive effect, particularly in individuals with mild hypertension.

Antioxidant Activity

Studies have demonstrated the antioxidant capacity of green coffee bean extract in vitro and in vivo

Safety

  • Green coffee bean extract is generally considered safe for most adults when taken orally for short periods.
  • Potential side effects may include headaches, upset stomach, nervousness, and insomnia, primarily due to the caffeine content.
  • Individuals sensitive to caffeine should exercise caution.
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult with a healthcare professional before using green coffee bean extract.
  • It can interact with certain medications, so consulting a doctor before using is very important.
